Continuing Education

We offer continuing education on several levels every year to employees. Annually GHS presents a Renal Care Symposium which all employees are encouraged to attend.  The Symposium is free to employees and continuing education credits for nursing have been approved every year.  We have world class speakers presenting interesting and stimulating topics. The objective is to enhance the attendees understanding of the field of nephrology and care of the renal patient.  Ideas for topics are identified from staff and through the literature.  The information presented keeps Greenfield Health Systems’ staff current on new technologies and trends in nephrology. You will earn CEU’s and enjoy the delicious food that will be served to you in the luxurious conference room. The symposium was held last year at Inn at St. John’s Plymouth.

Continuing education is also given through unit in-services.  Topics are identified in each unit by the staff, managers and medical directors.  The  Education department that then develops a program for that unit’s topic.  This process allows for the education to be specific to the unit’s needs.  Examples are care of fistulas versus grafts, use of automatic external defibrillator (AED), emergency response to change in levels of consciousness and documentation.  Other topics include new medications or technologies used in the units.

A “Policy of the Month” program assists staff stay current and understand the rationale behind various identified policies.  An identified policy is posted in the units for one month.  The “Policy of the Month” is brightly colored with the rationale of the steps in the procedure highlighted so staff will not only know what to do but why they should do it.   There is Education department contact information if there are further questions

We also provide an orientation to dialysis to non-clinical staff  such as Social Workers, Registered Dietitians, Dialysis Assistants and Unit Clerks.  This training is in addition to the job specific responsibilities and unit orientation of a non-clinical employee.  The eight-hour class enhances understanding of dialysis therapies, the renal patient, clinical staff responsibilities and the impact the non-clinical staff have on patient care.

Greenfield Health Systems (GHS), a division of Henry Ford Health System, has been providing comprehensive dialysis education and training for more than twenty-five years.

GHS believes in the importance of excellent training and education to build a strong foundation to prepare new staff in the field of dialysis; as well as continuing education for experienced staff. We also believe that effective learning should be enjoyable and exciting.

The orientation program for newly hired staff is 8 weeks. This training includes 100 hours of theory and 220 hours of clinical rotation.  The staff educator presents theory and practice in the classroom for 2 weeks. A facility tour is provided during the first week to introduce new staff to different departments of dialysis and for observation in the clinical setting. Three weeks is spent in a dialysis facility to have “hands on” practice with patients. This is the most exciting part of training because the orientees will apply the knowledge and new skills that they learned in the classroom.

Training in the facility is fun and exciting for the trainees as well as the experienced dialysis staff and educator. We join forces to train new orientees. We are consistent in our practice that makes learning the skills easy to master. We focus on giving one on one training and providing a lot of opportunities to practice new skills. Patients are receptive and willing to be involved in the training program.

After 5 weeks with the staff educator, the orientees are now ready to go to their respective facility to continue their training with the preceptor. The preceptor is a highly qualified staff member that will support and provide comprehensive, systematic and individualized training. The preceptor will be a resource person and  mentor; as well as helping the orientee nurture their newly acquired skills.

The Education Department is committed and dedicated to training orientees to be effective and compassionate caregivers.  We put our patients first by proving each patient the quality of care and comfort we want for our families and for ourselves.  We value and respect our patients; recognizing that they deserve the best. By providing excellent training, we can rest assured that we are giving HIGH QUALITY CARE. as we touch the lives of our patients.

My experience as a new Dialysis Technician within Greenfield  Health System is going well. Thanks to our wonderful Staff Educators. They are very patient and thorough in their profession. Compared to my previous training as a Dialysis Technician, the training I have received here is far greater and much appreciated.

The in depth training prepared me to be a successful hemodialysis nurse. What seemed difficult and intimidating to me at
first was made simple by the knowledgeable, helpful and patient staff.

The Educators over at Greenfield  Health System did a great job with training their staff. They were courteous, patient, professional and surprisingly approachable. The good thing about the experience was that almost all of the concerns are brought up and dealt with right then and there. The Educators made sure that we got the most of the Theory and Clinical Aspects of the training program.

When I first started out, I did not really know what to expect. Dialysis was a word I heard very little about. Five weeks have passed and I could say I am now well educated. They went above and beyond their job description to make sure I knew it al. Not only I was learning about dialysis, but I was enjoying it.
